Wisdom Wednesday – Welcoming Knowledge

Wisdom within the workplace

Wisdom – definition: the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement.

We always refer to the wise old owl, why?! Wisdom doesn’t just refer to your colleagues who are nearing retirement and have spent many years learning the job. Whilst older, more experienced and having a vast range of knowledge because of time served, doesn’t mean they are the only ones who are wise.

  • Experience – Whilst experience usually goes hand in hand with time, it doesn’t always. You could have someone who is 50 years of age and haven’t really invested much into their job or career. On the other hand, you could have someone in their late 20’s who have spent every moment they could perfecting their skills and expertise.
  • Knowledge – Whilst some argue that too much knowledge is a bad thing, in our opinion you can never have too much of the right knowledge. Information is so readily available these days, if we don’t know the answer to a question, we just google it. Is it efficient or just lazy? (We are guilty of this also… No criticising here!) Our brains are like a huge filing system, but do we empty our brains regularly because we can just as easily obtain the information again?
  • Good Judgement – Sometimes known as common sense, age doesn’t come into this at all. Good Judgement is all about evaluating the information you have to hand, weighing up your pro’s and cons, assessing the risk and then making a decision based on those factors.

Within Health and Safety, new regulations and legislation are always being brought out and updated. How clued up are you? When was the last time you reviewed this information?

Whilst in our opinion you can never have too much of the right knowledge, too much of the wrong knowledge can be dangerous. Why not speak to your colleagues, consult your Health and Safety department and ask the right questions?

Am I carrying out this task correctly?

Am I working to the latest rules and regulations?
